IP EXPO Europe, 8-9 October 2014, ExCeL, London.

Moving IP EXPO Europe to the ExCeL in 2014 would always present challenges but this was a very informative event. It was great to see so many passionate speakers and vendors looking at innovative ways to advance IT to help drive business.

The Government’s Chief Technology Officer, Liam Maxwell, used his keynote speech to be critical of the amount the government used to spend on IT and its procurement processes. Maxwell highlighted that in 2009 the UK government spent £16bn on IT – a huge 1% of the UK economy – and that a large amount of contracts was completed by a very small number of companies. By introducing new policies and expanding its supply chain to over 300 businesses, procurement has become more competitive, resulting in savings of £1.3bn in the past year.

Away from the keynotes speakers there were some great panel discussions, interesting product launches and demonstrations across the exhibition stands.
